What currency is best for travellers cheques?
If Cuban Convertable Pesos are available from an ATM how can I get some CUP to spend in the informal economy. Do I need to? |

Hi there,
as a tourist in Cuba you will mainly need CUC. The only places that would take Cuban peso are markets, pizza stalls and other street vendors, or if you were to jump on a truck (mainly used as means of transport in the Oriente region).
You can change either Pound Sterling or CUC into Cuban peso at the 'Cadeca' money exchange booths. These are clearly signed. I suggest you change something like 5 Pound and see how you go.
Your traveller's cheques should be Pound Sterling or Euro. Don't bother with US Dollars as you would be penalised with extra charges for using / changing them.
Enjoy Cuba !!!

| Does anyone know if American Express Sterling travellers cheques are accepted? I'm having trouble finding anything but in the UK. |

American Express Traveller Cheques are in general NOT accepted in Cuba. Thomas Cook Traveller cheques are accepted. Note that sometimes the traveller cheques can cause problems, in some Cuban banks they compare the signature on the cheques with the signature on your passport a small difference can cause problems.
The best option is to have enough cash with you, Pounds or Euros.
No dollars , to exchange dollars you will pay an extra 10% tax.
You can use a Visa or Mastercard (not issued or processed by a US bank) But in Cuba, cash is king, there are very few ATM's and paying with credit or debit cards is non existant.
