Hi there,
I heard from one of my sources that DVD players are confiscated by the customs, while the other source says that there are no problems.
Does anyone know the official view? |

Hi:
There is a new regulation that allows importing DVD players. There are two options: the first one is when you bring an used portable DVD player and it is considered as a personal good so you donīt have to pay any tax. In this case you are supposed to export it back. The other option is that you can import some other goods for up to a maximum value of USD 1000.00 paying taxes. The amount of those taxes depends on the value of the goods. Please visit the web site of the Cuban Customs http://www.aduana.islagrande.cu/turista.htm . So in general the answer is yes, you can bring a DVD player. |

Silvia,
if that is true, can you explain why was I taken away portable DVD player on Holguin airport and, in order to get it back, made to go through some horrendous bureaucratic procedure which forced me to give it away? |

Hi:
As you can see in the mentioned web site http://www.aduana.islagrande.cu/turista.htm (that is the official web site of Cuban Customs) the official view is that you can bring up to a maximum of 2 DVDs paying the corresponding tax. In general you can bring goods for a maximum value of up to USD 1000.00. The rest could be confiscated.
Kind regards,
Victor |

| We went in 2005 and my young daughter carried one in her back pack, customs said it was ok as it was for her personal use. We also too two in our luggage, customs look through most all luggage, they let us take ours through, but charge a fee, which is up to them, based on the total value of items appearing to be gifts. |
