This item is just to let interested people know that there is an organisation in Cuba who is making a difference in animal suffering.
They seek to eliminate the suffering of Cuban animals through mass sterilization campaigns, public education, assisting refuges, promoting animal health, and hands-on intervention in cases of animal suffering. TAP (the American sattelite organisation who is collecting money voor Aniplant, because in Cuba is no possibility) provides support and Aniplant, with its volunteers, provides on-the-scene assistance to Cuban animals. Last year Aniplant has sterilized 4016 animals in Cuba.
About Aniplant;
Aniplant is an independent membership organization dedicated to the protection of animals. It is not part of the Cuban government, but it is the only animal protection organization permitted to function in Cuba. Aniplant's headquarters is in Havana, but it provides services throughout most parts of the country.
Objectives:
Instill in the general public an appreciation of the sentient nature of animals
Educate dog and cat guardians about the importance of sterilization of their companions and the need for good veterinary care
Use all appropriate means to reduce the number of stray animals in Cuba
Act to eliminate animal suffering wherever it is found
Promote the adoption of domestic dogs and cats

Ik ben silvia van der Zande en heb 11 jaar in Cuba gewoond en woon nu in Cancun Mexico.
Ik ben als eerste begonnen in Havana met sterilisatiecampagnes en heb samen proberen te werken met Nora van Aniplant en met het ministerie van volksgezondheid in Havana.
Uiteindelijk ben ik zelf begonnen met het organiseren van campagnes met hulp van de SBA (Stichting Buitenlandse Asielen) in Nederland.
Met donaties via deze stichting hebben we in een paar jaar tijd 5872 sterilisaties gedaan voor straathonden en voor mensen die de operatie niet konden betalen . Daarbij heb ik gewerkt aan een wet ter bescherming van de dieren want nooit doorgekomen is, verbeterring van Zoonosis waar de opgepakte straathonden afgemaakt worden met estricnina (rattengif) en nog veel meer.
In 2004 ben ik uit Cuba vertrokken en zijn de projecten stil komen te liggen.
Daarna is Terry Shewchuck een Canadees ook betrokken geweest met sterilisatiescampagnes in Cuba. Zijn e mail adressen zijn.
