The Spanky Project and APAC-Varadero Canadian Branch (Association for the Protection of Animals Cuba) are two Canadian organizations that make a real difference helping Cubans in their struggle to help stray animals. The Spanky Project focuses on Havana, while APAC-Varadero is involved in the touristy area of Varadero, including the city of Cardenas.

Over eight years of co-operation with Cuban veterinarians (Consejo Cientifico Veterinario de Cuba) allowed the Spanky Project to organize regular de-parasitation and sterilization clinics in Old Havana neighbourhood, and beyond. The next big event for the Spanky Project is catch-sterilize-return campaign planned for February 2012. Air Transat and CANDi (another Canadian organization) will be delivering live traps necessary for the campaign.

APAC-Varadero was established in 2009 and it is registered in the Province of Alberta.
Last year, a group of volunteer veterinarians from the Varadero area performed 1,100 surgeries (at that time anesthetics were received from ANIPLANT while APAC-Varadero Canadian supporters brought all other medical and non-medical supplies). In addition, APAC-Varadero helps Canadians, who are interested in adopting a dog, or a cat from Cuba, to make sure that the animals are healthy, sterilized and properly vaccinated before coming to Canada. Since Fall 2011, APAC-Varadero works in co-operation with the Scientific Counsel of Cuban Veterinarians (Consejo Cientifico Veterinario de Cuba)

Canadians are the largest tourist group in Cuba. Over one million Canadians visited Cuba in 2010 spending 748 million dollars on their trips to this beautiful island. Both organizations are successfully motivating Canadians to get involved in solving an issue of stray animals population across Cuba.

We are hoping that you can spare a few dollars to help one Cuban animal to have a better life, and to prevent countless numbers of kittens or puppies to be born to life of suffering and misery. Both APAC-Varadero and the Spanky Project have their Facebook Pages and websites. We welcome you to visit both, and to see what you can do for Cuba, the Sleeping Giant of the Caribbeans.

I just got back from Grand Memories Sancruary varadero resort and there were 2 female dogs around the resort. They were so nice I hugged and petted them. The black and white one came to my room and I fed her. She slept on the couch then on the balcony that was on ground floor. I was watched by the staff.. I went to get my lunch and when I came back the dog was gone. Only 10 minutes had passed. I found it strang.. I also think the dogs had babies. I wanted to bring the black and white dog home to canada but the staff said no.
I never saw the dog after. I guess they scared her away.
