What do the Cuban people 'really' need?

I will be traveling to Caya Coco in the next few months. I have read many online comments that it would be a good idea to bring items for hotel staff - like children's clothing, medical supplies, cosmetics etc.

I am wondering what items are truly needed the most, and how do I know that I am not offending anyone by assuming they need these things from me.

I would appreciate any advice.

Thank you!

I always take over the counter medications .. like Tylonol, Advill Shampoo to get rid of lice, bandaids ..etc .

For the schools I bring pencils, pen's, sharpeners, sheets of stickers that the teachers can put on the childrens work .. Colored Markers..
Give them to the Principal of the school

Gloves for the workers..

I also take pain killers, antiseptic creams etc, any good quality clothes for adults or children, anything to write with - bearing in mind that paper is also difficult to get hold of - cycle puncture repair kits are apparently like gold dust to find and there are lots of people with bikes.

I used to take toiletries but now find that I can buy them there easily enough in the dollar shops, and they are heavy when you have weight restrictions on luggage. Obviously the Cubans themselves can't afford to buy them but I found prices not that much different from home (France).

We're going this year for Christmas and will be staying with a family there where we had been before (wonderful experience). I have asked whether there is anything that they particularly need and have been asked for a pair of size 44 trainers. I know they won't ask me for any more that that, but will be grateful for anything. What they don't need will be passed on to friends and family.

In the past I have traveled to the holguin area and have asked people what they would like. In response, I have been told such things as medical supplies and musical instuments for children. These can include kazoos and small flutes. I try to avoid plastics and packaging since they really don't have an adequate garbage disposal system.

Can you get instruments for the kids, and spend some one on one time with them.
