| I'm moving to live in Cuba in a few months and am looking for a job. Can you advise anywhere that may employ foreigners? |

Hi Rachel:
It is not that simple to find a job in Cuba, at least not one with a good salary (I mean working for a foreign company or for the government etc). Apart from all legal issues for having the right of working in Cuba (work permit, temporary residence etc) a normal salary is around USD 10.00 per month (CUP 240.00). Explaining you all this is very complicated. Maybe you are confused now but believe me, things in Cuba are really very very complicated. Just one example: there are two currencies: the CUC or Cuban Convertible Pesos and the CUP or Cuban Pesos. The salaries are paid in CUP but shops are in CUC. Please note that 1CUC = 24.00 CUP.
Kind regards,

Rachel,
I have worked in Cuba in 2005 - but had to set-up, seek contacts, support and permits for doing it myself and it ended up being voluntary work which I entirely funded myself. It took about a year to get it organised (incl 3 trips). Not easy indeed.
Legally no Cuban entity can employ you - they have to priorise Cuban citizens. Even if you find somebody who will give you work, they would pay you a Cuban salary, which Victor points out will be around 10 - 15 $/m
Only foreign companies can legally employ you and get you through the visa and permit stages that allow you a prolongued stay in the country. These jobs are rare and require contacts, endless search, special knowledge .... etc, etc. ( I have made several attempts before going the voluntary project route).
Not meaning to discourage you, continue trying. From my own experience I would recommend that you try a 3 month's stay in Cuba first (tourist) and assess how much you really want to live there. Life in Cuba is very, very hard and what looks romantic for a week turns out to be anything but.
I would go again, even live in Cuba - but on the basis of previous experiences and longterm stays now know exactly what I would need to have in place to make a life in Cuba a success.
Good luck ! |
