| I'm travelling to Cuba next week and I heard so many different things about safety tips for going to Cuba. They advise me not to take any jewlery or expensive clothes as they might steel them from me. I imagine about the jewls it could be true, but what about the clothes? Do I better wear very informal clothes? Is it really an issue? Thank you for your reply. |

Hi,
I've been going to Cuba since 2000 and never had any problems regarding safety. Yes, the things can get stolen here and there but that has happened to me in Spain and USA too. If your clothes is too flashy and conspicously expensive that could attract the thieves, although, if you're staying at the hotel your clothes will be safe.
As far as the thieving of jewellery goes, I must take the side of the thieves here. Anyone who goes to the poor country like Cuba and flashes out expensive jewellery deserves all the treatment he/she will get from the thieves. And good luck to them in reselling the items!! |

Hi Marisa:
There is not any perfect country or society all over the world and Cuba is not the exemption. But in general Cuba is very safe. It happens from time to time that a thieve takes something from you and runs away but the solution in my opinion is just trying not to have too many golden chains etc with you, taking care when carrying, for example, the photo camera or a bag, especially the one with your credit cards, money and documents, and never taking your passport with you but just a photocopy. That will be enough. It is also good idea trying not to use very extravagant clothes but at the end any cuban will notice you are a tourist so do not be afraid, I repeat you, Cuba is not a perfect country but it is very safe, there are A LOT of policemen everywhere (maybe more than I would like to see).
