Hi,
I read recently, I can't remember where, that there is a village in Cuba where people talk english among themselves. I think it is in the central part. Apparently, they are of Jamaican ancestry and managed to retain their culture and language.
Is it true?
If it is, what is the name, what province it is in and how can you get there? |

| The only place I have "actually" found an English speaking community in Cuba is in Guantanamo City. Here there is the British West Indian Community Centre. It is an increasingly small community. They play the odd game of cricket. You can get more general information about the city from www.guantanamocity.org |

| In Vertientes, Camaguey province, you can find a community with jamaican roots. Some people there talks some of creole and english. Also managed to retain their culture, the careful education of the children and the respect to the majors (characteristic of the Jamaicans), as well as the typical meals. |

There is jamaican community that lives in Guantanamo city or around Guantanamo, but regarding English language, they meet in one place in Guantanamo calls center, they can meet daily or at weekend or once a month.
They organized party, or any activity, and they speak in English.
Also exist another community called Indian Villa, there leaves only Indian, this community has they own culture, they are very small people, the culture is very strange, but dressed normally. They live in Caridad de los Indios (and only can go there by jeep). |

| I read recently about an isolated village in Cuba that was founded by Caymanese fishermen on the south shore of Cuba, where, until recently, English was spoken by the older inhabitants. The article centered around the last of the English speakers passing away, and the Caymanese culture had been suppressed after the revolution. I cannot recall the name of this village, but I do recall that one could only get there by sea, or by four wheel drive vehicle.....there were no roads leading there. I came across this information today searching for more information. I would certainly like to have more information.....I was speaking with Australians about English in this part of the world (I live in Key West), and I would like to be able to cite a source other than my faulty memory. |
